Video interview of SPCA officer.

This is an interview we had with one of the SPCA officers.

Questions:

1. How many animal abuse cases do you have on a yearly basis?

2. So how do you handle such cases?

3. Has there been an increase in the number of animal abuse cases?

4. Do you think there is enough awareness about animal abuse?

5. So, what is your opinion on animal abuse?

6. We have come up with solutions like making bookmarks to raise awareness on animal abuse cases… Do you think this is effective?

Animal Abuse?

Over the past few years, the number of animals being abused in Singapore has been rising gradually. While some people abuse animals purposely, there are others who do it unknowkingly. But, even then its still considered as a form of abuse!

There are mainly five reasons why people abuse animals.
They are :-

1)a way to relief stress, relax
2)regarded as fun
3)social influence, by friends and family
4)mentally unstable
5)unaware of the law and order

According to our research and the interview conducted at the SPCA, we realised that many people are still unaware of what animal abuse is and what are the consequences of doing so. Therefore, we as a team want to raise awareness about animal abuse through this blog! Hope you will get to know more(:

Every life is precious...

Life is precious. It is everywhere, inside us and all around us, it has so many forms. It is gods gift and we must learn to treasure it, or at least not harm , it may be man's, plant's or even animal's! That is why we strongly feel that animal abuse is a very cruel act of the mankind which takes away lifes of many innocent animals.

We humans are made entirely of non-human elements, such as plants, minerals, earth, clouds, and sunshine. For our practice to be deep and true, we must include the ecosystem. If the environment is destroyed, humans will be destroyed, too. Protecting human life is not possible without also protecting the lives of animals! Therefore everyone should think wisely before they act, SAVE THE CUTE ANIMALS(:

Cases of Animal Abuse!

Cases of Animal Abuse.

10 January 1998 -

The SPCA received a report from a member of the public in the Marsiling area on 10th January 1998 that a kitten had been trampled to death by a small boy. On visiting the scene, the body of a kitten was found and sent for post mortem examination. The case is now under police investigation.

2 January 1998 -

The SPCA rescued a lame monkey (a long-tailed macaque) on Sentosa Inland in response to a report from Sentosa Rangers Station on the night 2nd January 1998. The injured monkey was subsequently sent to the Singapore Zoological Gardens for euthanasia. After the examination at the zoo by Senior Veterinarian Dr. Paolo Martelli, it was discovered that a 14.5 cm piece of wood (appearing to originate from a broom-stick) was forcefully inserted in the macaque's anus and after piercing the rectal wall embedded itself in the m.psoas (long muscle masses that follow the spine on each side). The lesion was estimated to be somewhere between two and seven days old. According to Dr. Martelli, the animal, if left unattended, would have suffered a long and painful death. The SPCA, after making enquiries from the Ranger's station on Sentosa Island was told that it was thought to have been a road accident victim. The evidence though, proved otherwise. The were no witnesses to this cruel and inhumane act.

2 September 1997 -

The SPCA received a call from the Ang Mo Kio police reporting that a dog was burnt. The society's driver went to the scene which was a construction site at Track 1 Punggol Road. The animal had been torched by several Thai construction workers and was still alive. Its extensive body injuries indicated that the dog had suffered extreme pain and torture, and it was taken immediately to a veterinarian for euthanasia. The four perpetrators were charged in court and jailed for two months each. The SPCA wrote to the Attorney General's Chambers requesting for an appeal for a stiffer sentence in view of the severe suffering and injuries to the dog.

11th September 1997 -

Ong Seng Chiang was jailed for 6 weeks in March 1998 for ill-treating 3 pigeons, by hanging then upside down from the parapet outside his flat. Two of them died when SPCA's Inspector reached the scene.

What we all need to do in case of an emergency

Of course, nobody wishes to ever come upon such dreadful things - to witness any sort of animal abuse. But no matter how much we try to avoid such matters, it's always beneficial, necessary in fact, to know that there are still mentally unstable people out there to hurt these poor animals, which is one of the major reasons why we the dolphins are trying so desperately to create awareness to the public on the issue of animal abuse.

Animal abuse can take place anywhere, anytime, in any way.

It does not necessarily have to be a man throwing stones at an injured cat, or a mischeivous boy attacking a wild dog with a catapult. Animal abuse can just take place in a typical pet shop where they sell underage rabbits. This is a serious thing many people do not realise as by doing so, the pet shop is endangering the poor animals by increasing their mortality rate.
Thus, here is a list of hotlines.
